Your Mattress May Be Making You Hot...Here’s Why

Do you ever find yourself tossing and turning at night, unable to get comfortable because of how warm you are? Does it ever feel like someone has lit a fire under your mattress and is slowly roasting you alive while you try to sleep?

Okay, maybe that’s an extreme way of putting it, but the simple truth is this: lots of people are overheating at night in bed. If you’re one of those people, you’re not alone.

You might be surprised by one of the potential culprits of this problem, though. Your mattress.

Yes, that’s right. Your mattress could be what’s causing you to overheat or even suffer from annoying night sweats. The key to avoiding those problems could be as simple as choosing the right mattress.

How can your mattress make you warm?

Not all mattresses are created equal. Some will trap heat and make you hot (and possibly bothered but def not in a fun way!), while others allow heat to pass through them and dissipate. It all comes down to what materials are used to make the mattress.

Mattresses made from materials like memory foam, polyester, and polyurethane are not very breathable. They absorb and retain the heat from your body, creating a miserable kind of sauna bed. Bed sauna? Whatever, we think you’ll agree that there’s a time and a place for a sauna and your mattress at night just is not it.

Unfortunately, if you have a mattress made of one of these heat-trapping materials, there’s not a lot you can do to stop your nighttime overheating and night sweats.

You’ve probably already tried the obvious options like turning down your heat, choosing cooler sheets, and even sleeping naked to no avail. The best way forward is to invest in a mattress made of breathable materials.

What are good mattress options to prevent overheating?

When you’re looking for a mattress that will help prevent overheating, try to find options made of breathable, cool materials like latex and springs.

Spring mattresses, those old classics, are great because the spaces between the spring coils let air circulate. More air circulation equals a cooler mattress which equals better sleep for you. Simple math. They teach that in kindergarten, right?

Natural latex is another big winner when it comes to staying cool and getting good sleep at night. Latex mattresses consistently get excellent reviews saying that they stay comfortably cool and don't retain heat.

Yet another option, if you’re feeling nostalgic, is a waterbed. These mattresses also have a good reputation for keeping sleepers cool at night but honestly, you’d probably be better off just throwing on some neon and watching the Breakfast Club to get your '80s fix.

One last note. Don’t overlook the mattress cover when you’re picking a new mattress. The right mattress cover can round out an already great, cooling mattress, while the wrong one can tank the whole cool sleep operation. Opt for breathable materials like eucalyptus lyocell, and avoid moisture-trapping materials like polyester.

Is the perfect mattress right under your nose?

Sometimes your search can be over before it even really begins. Luckily for you, we know of a mattress that will keep you from overheating at night. It’s cool in every sense of the word.

The Sheets & Giggles Eucalyptus mattress is made with breathable latex, airflow-promoting coils, and a cooling Eucalyptus Lyocell cover.

    Hi Brianna,

The S&G Eucalyptus Mattress is a medium-firm build. Because it’s made with two layers of latex on top, it’s quite plush and responsive. There will be a 100-day trial period, so if it’s not everything you hoped for and dreamed of, you can totally return it.

I’m obsessed with your sheets and am getting ready to buy a new mattress in the very near future. However, I need a super, ultra-plush mattress. Do you know what firmness level the S&G mattress will be, or will there be multiple options?
