Got back pain? It might be your mattress

Getting up in the morning is hard enough without adding aches and pains to the mix. If you often wake up with a sore, stiff back, it may be time to look for the culprit.

Don’t rush too quickly into blaming the passing years, either (as tempting as that may be). Aging is just one possible cause of back pain. One cause that you might not have considered yet is your mattress.

Yup, that’s right, you could be living in your very own version of “the Princess and the Pea.” And if you don’t make a change, you might miss out on your own happily ever after living back pain-free.

Here are some signs to help you determine if your mattress is causing your back pain.

Just think... with the best mattress for back pain, you could be this happy.

Signs your mattress is bad for your back

1. Your back pain is worse in the mornings

If your back pain is mostly consistent throughout the day, it’s unlikely that your mattress is the root cause. If, on the other hand, your back always aches the most when you wake up in the morning, it’s time to take a closer look at your mattress.

Don’t pull out a magnifying glass or anything; just be on the lookout for other signs that your mattress is the root of your back pain.

2. You sink into your mattress

Okay, sometimes the thought of your mattress swallowing you whole is pretty appealing. That said, actually sinking too far into your mattress when you sleep can lead to back pain.

When you sink into your mattress, you can’t move around freely. It also prevents your spine from staying properly aligned while you sleep.

Between those two factors, a mattress without enough support will end up causing you back pain.

3. You can’t get comfortable at night

Not being able to move in your sleep is bad for your back, but so is moving too much. Shocking, right?

If you find that you’re tossing and turning at night, unable to get comfortable, that’s a big red flag that your mattress isn’t a good fit.

4. You wake up during the night

Ideally, we’d all be able to fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows and stay asleep until the morning. Alas, this isn’t an ideal world. More than one-third of adults report waking up during the night at least three times per week.

If you wake up at night, you’re certainly not alone. But even though waking up at night is common, it’s still not good for you. (Much like drunk texting your ex or watching just one more episode)

Getting uninterrupted sleep is a vital part of any healthy routine. When you find yourself waking up during the night, that can indicate that your mattress isn’t providing the proper support. Over time, that lack of support will hurt your back and your overall health.

5. You’re still tired when you wake up

Is there anything worse than waking up in the morning and still feeling exhausted? It’s just wrong. It’s also a sign that your mattress could be causing your back pain.

A bad mattress can decrease the amount of deep sleep you get, preventing you from feeling rested even after a full night’s sleep. When your mattress has that kind of impact on your sleep, it might be the culprit.
