Polyester's Microplastics Issue

Understanding the Vast Impact of Polyester on Our Planet and Health

Since day 1, Sheets & Giggles has been dedicated to offering bedding that's not just luxurious, but also environmentally responsible. In a world increasingly aware of its ecological footprint, it's important to understand the impact of our choices, right down to our bedding. Polyester, a common material in bedding – 66% of the entire market! – significantly contributes to microplastic pollution. Humans are now eating or drinking a credit card's worth of microplastic every week (you read that right), so let's explore why this is a problem and how we can make better choices for ourselves and the planet.

The Microplastics Problem in Numbers

Studies have shown that a single load of laundry containing polyester fabrics can release millions of microplastic fibers into the water system. These fibers then accumulate in our oceans, rivers, and even drinking water. The global scale of polyester use means that the cumulative impact of these microfibers is vast and concerning.

Environmental and Health Impacts

Once in the environment, microplastics pose a threat to marine life and disrupt ecosystems. They also enter our food chain, with potential risks to human health. The full extent of these risks is still being researched, but the implications are worrying, particularly in terms of hormonal imbalances, cancer, and other health issues.

Polyester in Bedding: A Hidden Source

While polyester's prevalence in clothing is widely known, its use in bedding is often overlooked. And because sheets are a huge amount of fabric relative to a t-shirt, we estimate that up to 10 million microplastic particles can leach into waterways with a single warm-water wash.

Eco-Friendly Alternatives: The Better Choice

To alleviate our microplastics problem, Sheets & Giggles offers a sustainable alternative: Eucalyptus Lyocell bedding. Eucalyptus requires far less water to grow vs cotton, our fiber production process utilizes reusable amine oxide to minimize waste and pollution, and our products are USDA BioPreferred – meaning they are certified plant-based alternatives to oil-based synthetics like polyester sheets. And don't get us started on oil-based foam mattresses...

Your Role in Reducing Microplastics

By choosing eco-friendly fabrics, you're taking a proactive step in reducing your contribution to microplastic pollution. Your decision to switch from polyester to a sustainable alternative like eucalyptus lyocell can make a positive impact on our planet's health and your own. In great numbers, these decisions add up and can re-shape the global market for years or decades to come.
