Eucalyptus Bedding FAQs

Welcome to our cheat sheet for eucalyptus sheets, where we’ve compiled some of the most common questions received from customers over the years.

If you have any questions that aren’t answered here, drop us a message and we’ll add it to the list! In the meantime, grab a snack, sit down and find out everything you could want to know about eucalyptus bedding...

Are eucalyptus sheets better for the environment than cotton?

Yes, our 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell sheets are far better for the environment than cotton sheets (even organic cotton). For example:

  • Eucalyptus sheets use less water during the manufacturing process (150 liters) than cotton (4,000 liters).
  • Eucalyptus sheets use 30% less energy during manufacturing compared to cotton sheets.
  • Cotton crops use arable land, taking up space that could be used for crop and food production, whereas eucalyptus trees can be grown on land which isn’t suitable for crops.
  • Eucalyptus Lyocell uses no pesticides or insecticides, whereas the cotton production process does, using products and chemicals that kill the birds and the bees.

For more detail on why eucalyptus sheets are better for the planet, see our article which describes 6 ways in which cotton is harmful to the environment.

Are eucalyptus sheets better for you than cotton?

So they’re better for the planet - but what about for you? Well, we think eucalyptus sheets are better in the bedroom as well...

  • Eucalyptus bedding is recommended for sensitive skin - it has round fiber filaments which means less friction compared to the wavy cotton fibers.
  • Eucalyptus sheets are highly breathable and keep you from overheating, even if you’re prone to night sweats or hot flashes.
  • Eucalyptus sheets wick moisture away and stay dry. This means bacteria don’t grow, dust mites don’t thrive, and the sheets stay fresher for longer, compared to cotton sheets which hold onto the moisture, causing more problems.

What is ‘Eucalyptus Lyocell’?

Eucalyptus Lyocell is material created from the pulp of eucalyptus which is then processed into fiber, before we spin and weave it into the perfect bedding.

Are eucalyptus sheets good?

We think eucalyptus sheets are excellent. Sustainable, environmentally friendly, long-lasting, easy to maintain, and comfortable to sleep in –eucalyptus bedding is better for the planet, and better for you.

Are eucalyptus sheets sustainable?

Yes - our sheets are made from trees grown on sustainably managed, biodiverse farms, not from endangered or ancient forests. You can rest assured that we do everything we can to reduce our impact on the environment.

How is Eucalyptus Lyocell better for my sleep than conventionally-grown cotton?

Eucalyptus bedding is recommended for sensitive skin - the round fiber filaments result in less friction compared to the wavy fibers of cotton which provides a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Eucalyptus sheets are also extremely breathable and stop you from overheating, so it’s a perfect alternative material to cotton, especially if you’re prone to night sweats or hot flashes.

Eucalyptus sheets wick moisture away, remaining dry. This stops bacterial growth and prevents dust mites, as well as keeping the sheets fresh for longer.

Cotton sheets hold onto moisture, which allows these factors to become a problem.

Are eucalyptus sheets better than bamboo sheets?

Both bamboo and eucalyptus can be harvested from sustainable sources and provide similar qualities in the end product in terms of soft, breathable sheets.

However, the process of turning the bamboo pulp into fibers is where some differences come into play, and where we believe eucalyptus is the better option. Far more water and chemicals are used in the bamboo process - one of which (carbon disulfide) can cause damage to workers exposed to it.

This is in contrast to the eucalyptus process which uses a closed-loop process, meaning nearly all the water and solvents used are recovered to be used again, meaning far less waste. We also use an organic solvent called N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide hydrate (NMMO), which is nontoxic, biodegradable, and almost completely recycled.

Isn’t eucalyptus endangered?

Our eucalyptus isn’t harvested from endangered forests. We source from trees grown on sustainably managed, biodiverse farms - and we donate money to save koala habitats (in 2019, we donated $17,000 to the World Wildlife Fund to rescue and protect koalas endangered by the Australian wildfires).

We also plant a new native tree in places that need reforestation for every single order we receive (as of this writing, we've planted over 44,000 trees - see the most up-to-date number at the bottom of our home page).

I’m allergic to eucalyptus. Is your bedding safe for me?

100% yes. Our bedding is made out of the pulped wood of the tree (not the leaves which is what people are allergic to), before being processed into 100% safe fabric. This also means that even if you have a bad reaction to eucalyptus scent, oil, or other products, you'll be absolutely fine with our sheets.

Do eucalyptus sheets smell of eucalyptus?

No - our sheets are created from the pulp of the wood of eucalyptus plants, not the leaves. It’s the leaves that contain the oil and therefore the scent, so as a result, the sheets are not scented.

My pet is allergic to eucalyptus scent - will these sheets cause them a problem?

While it's true that animals can have a bad reaction to eating eucalyptus leaves, because the product utilizes the wood of the eucalyptus plant and not the leaves, the oil and scent are not infused into the product.

How do I wash eucalyptus bedding?

This is the tricky bit...just kidding. They’re really low maintenance and easy to take care of - they’re machine washable on the ‘cold delicates’ setting, and you can tumble dry them on a low heat - or hang them out in the breeze to dry in a natural fashion! We've got a full guide on how to wash eucalyptus bedding.

Do eucalyptus sheets keep you cool?

Yes they do! Our 100% Eucalyptus Lyocell products are moisture-wicking and have a low surface friction, resulting in bedding that always feels like the cool side of the pillow.

But don’t just take our word for it - lots of our customers who have had problems with night-sweats, hot flashes, and medical conditions that make them too hot have left glowing reviews praising our bedding for curing what ails 'em.

Do eucalyptus sheets come with a free koala?

We're pretty sure the USDA would have an issue with us handing out an invasive species with every order, but we'll keep writing them. As we mentioned above, we raised over $17,000 to save the critically endangered critters, so the least they could do is send a thank you note with every order. Just kidding, koalas, we love you.

And finally, the most frequently asked question... how do I entertain my children with sheets? Okay, I don't think anyone has ever asked us that before, but we've answered it anyway. In fact, we've written a whole blog post on how to entertain your kids with sheets - yes, really.

Hopefully that answers all of your eucalyptus bedding-based questions, but if there are any we’ve missed please let us know and we’ll be happy to answer them here.
