How long do hybrid mattresses last?

It’s no secret that mattresses can be super expensive. Buying a mattress is like the adult version of hiding cash under your mattress. Instead of putting your money below your mattress, you put it into a mattress, never to be seen again. Less fun, honestly, but we digress.

When you make a significant purchase like a new mattress, you probably want to know how long that investment will last. The lifespans of different mattress types can vary wildly, so it’s worth taking a closer look to see how long the type of mattress you choose will last.

Since more and more people are opting for hybrid mattresses, we thought we’d answer the burning question, how long do hybrid mattresses last?

Let’s get into it.

You can feel the excitement, can't you?

What are hybrid mattresses?

As you can probably guess from the name, a hybrid mattress is a mix of two mattress styles. Typically, they combine a metal coil support layer with a comfort layer made of foam or latex.

(The word hybrid does leave some room for experimentation, though. You could make a more exotic hybrid mattress, instead, like a coil-marshmallow combo to see if you get better sleep. Unlikely, but, hey, you’ll never know until you try…)

Your standard innerspring mattress also has metal coils and possibly some foam on top, but the comfort layer on hybrid mattresses is much thicker. Their unique structure makes hybrid mattresses body-conforming, breathable, and pressure-relieving.

The makeup of a hybrid mattress also directly affects how long it will last compared to other mattress types.

How long do hybrid mattresses last?

It’s time to answer the question that’s been rattling around in your head ever since you first discovered hybrid mattresses.

Are you ready? Here's how long hybrid mattresses last. Drumroll, please!

Hybrid mattresses made with latex typically last around 8-10 years. If you clean your mattress, flip it occasionally, and treat it with the love and respect it deserves (which is a lot, btw), you could give your latex hybrid mattress a lifespan as long as the average emu. Random, but it sounds pretty good, right?

This wingless emu certainly seems to think so!

As we mentioned earlier, though, latex hybrid mattresses aren’t the only kind. You can also find hybrid mattresses made with foam instead of latex.

Foam hybrid mattresses don’t tend to last as long as latex hybrid mattresses. We’re disappointed but not surprised. Your average hybrid mattress made with foam will last about 6-7 years, slightly longer than the average marriage in the U.S. So there’s that.

What happens at the end of a hybrid mattress’s lifespan?

The differences between foam and latex hybrid mattresses don’t end when their lifespans do. After your mattress sadly reaches the end of its useful life, you will hopefully look for a way to dispose of it without destroying the planet once your tears dry. Unfortunately, that’s much harder to do with a foam hybrid mattress.

Foam is simply… not eco-friendly. It’s made from plastic in a process that uses toxic chemicals we could never dream of being able to pronounce. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, but you needed to know.

The good news: latex is indeed sustainable. Latex is made from a sap-like substance from trees, so it’s biodegradable. Once you’re done with your latex hybrid mattress, you can rest easy knowing that it isn’t killing the Earth in a landfill somewhere.
