What Are The Best Kind of Sheets for Summer?

It’s finally summer again and you know what that means. Barbecues, fireworks, days at the beach with sand between your toes. Summer is the season of fun in the sun, but when the sun goes down, those hot and humid nights can be the stuff of nightmares.

We’re here to tell you that you don’t have to toss and turn at night, unable to get your beauty sleep in the sweltering heat. You just need a better set of sheets.

Gone are the days of sticking your (sweaty) feet out from under the sheets!

So, what are the best sheets for summer? Here are some of the most important qualities to look for:

Qualities of the Best Sheets for Summer

Breathability

The number one quality to consider when searching for summer sheets is breathability. If your sheets aren’t breathable, you’ll end up panting and sweaty in bed (and not for any fun reasons!) when you want to be asleep.

Choosing the right sheet material is key to getting breathable sheets. Silk is a very popular sheet material, but it’s not the most breathable. While silk sheets might feel cool to the touch initially, they will probably end up trapping heat and making you uncomfortable as the night goes on.

For truly breathable materials, you need to look toward other natural fibers like cotton and eucalyptus. Both of these fabrics are naturally light and breathable, making them perfect for summer sleeping.

Thread Count

There’s a very pervasive myth that sheets with a higher thread count are automatically higher-quality sheets. In reality, thread count is a scam

Not only can manufacturers artificially inflate the thread count, but even if the thread count is genuinely high, it still might not be your best option.

Sheets with higher thread counts (above 400) tend to be heavier and less breathable, leading to less comfortable summer sleeping conditions. If you want to sweat and suffocate under your expensive high thread count sheets this summer, be our guest. You could do better, though.

Sorry to hit you in the face with the truth about threat counts! It had to be done.

Moisture-Wicking Ability

Night sweats happen to the best of us, especially during the hot summer months. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, and it doesn’t have to impact your sleep, either.

Moisture-wicking sheets will absorb and distribute any sweat so it dries up before you even notice. Your summer sleep problems will just evaporate. Get it?

Once again, cotton and eucalyptus are both great options in terms of moisture-wicking ability. What can’t these fabrics do?

Color

We left color until last because it’s certainly not the most important factor to consider, but it’s still worth mentioning. If you are aiming for the absolute coolest sleep experience, you should choose light-colored sheets.

*And one of those light-up race car beds your mom never let you get, obviously. But we digress.*

Just like dark clothes, dark sheets can absorb the sun's warmth during the day. By the time you’re ready to crawl into bed, some of that residual heat will probably be there to throw off your sleep plans.

Light colors are the way to go. Just don’t forget to match your bedroom color!

Only drawback: the inevitable wine stains will be a little harder to get out.

The best sheets for summer, right here!

Sheets & Giggles’ eucalyptus lyocell sheets are an absolute must-have for hot sleepers this summer. They're made with breathable, moisture-wicking eucalyptus and check all the boxes of the best sheets for summer.

Best of all, Sleep Foundation just named them as the best sheets for temperature control (i.e. keeping you cool when it's super hot). Here's our favorite quote from the article:

The lyocell’s excellent breathability and moisture-wicking properties are ideal for hot sleepers, people who sweat in their sleep, and those who reside in exceptionally warm or humid locations. A silky-smooth hand-feel also makes the sheets a good option for sleepers with acne, eczema, and other conditions that cause sensitive skin. The set should appeal to anyone who enjoys soft, drapey bedding.

And they're right: These sheets will definitely keep you cool (and make you cool, honestly).
