Should you use a mattress protector?
When you lie awake in bed at night, are you plagued by questions like “how can I protect my mattress?” and “is sweat seeping into my mattress right now?” If so, you’re not the only one.
Come and join our support group for people worried about their mattresses. We’ve got the a’s for all your mattress q’s, starting with the number one question — should you use a mattress protector?
What is a mattress protector?
We should probably clear up what exactly a mattress protector is first, though.
A mattress protector is a thin fabric that looks a lot like a fitted sheet. It sits right over your mattress below your fitted sheet. Most mattress protectors are made of materials like cotton, lyocell, or polyester.
Behold all the textures of a mattress protector... breathtaking!
The main purpose of a mattress protector is — you guessed it — to protect your mattress. But what does a mattress need protection from, you ask? Mattress protectors protect mattresses from liquids or anything else that could damage them, like dirt and dust.
Should you use a mattress protector?
In case anyone’s busy, we’ll cut right to the point — yes, you definitely should use a mattress protector.
You know how sometimes when you were a kid, your parent would tell you something was optional but they said it in a tone of voice that said you really, really should do it? Using a mattress protector is kind of like that. Sure, it’s technically optional, but you really, really should. It just doesn’t make any sense not to.
tl;dr: Use a mattress protector!
Benefits of using a mattress protector
If you’re not convinced yet, here are some of the benefits of using a mattress protector.
Prevents stains and spills
Whenever you eat or drink in bed (hey, no judgment!), you run the risk of permanently staining your mattress. Even a simple water spill could cause damage.
We've been known to enjoy a glass of wine or two in bed ourselves, tbh
Yes, it is possible to clean your mattress, but you may never be able to get the stains out, no matter how thorough you are. Rather than living with a stained mattress forever, why not use a mattress protector and eliminate that risk?
Keeps your mattress free from skin flakes, sweat, and more
Prepare to be a little freaked out. Your mattress is probably the dirtiest object in your bedroom. Literally. And this is the thing you’re supposed to spend 7 to 9 hours per night on.
Ick.
All sorts of microscopic debris build up in your mattress over time. It’s not just layers of dust, either. An incredible (read: gross) amount of dead skin cells end up on your mattress each night. After ten years, one estimate puts the amount of dead skin in your mattress at over 10 pounds. 10 pounds! And if that’s not gross enough on its own, all that skin is like a Michelin star meal for dust mites.
Add that to the night sweats, and you have a really awful combination. The moisture from body sweat fosters mold, mildew, bacteria, and fungus. It’s enough to give you nightmares.
A mattress pad keeps all of these things out of your mattress, eliminating the ick factor and helping your mattress stay clean. An unsung hero, if you ask us.
Protects your investment
It’s fair to say that mattresses can get pretty pricey. There are a few reasons why mattresses are so expensive, but the bottom line is that your mattress is a big investment. Don’t you want to protect that investment?
